Joanna Sterling

How long have you been writing?

I started writing when I took early retirement and have been writing mainly short stories for over fifteen years.

What are you currently writing?

I have several short stories on the go at any one time. I also have two novels I have started but not yet finished.

What influences and inspires your writing?

Lots of things inspire me, it can be a person in the street, a picture, an article I read in the newspaper or magazine.  So many things will spark an idea I can develop into a story.  I try and read differing styles and genres to broaden my knowledge and appreciation.  I also attend Creative Writing courses and workshops to keep my skills honed and up-to-date.

What are your ambitions for your writing?

I would love to see a book of mine in Waterstones.

What is your preferred place and time to write?

I write in my study overlooking my back garden. I don’t have a time of day, I am not that disciplined, I know I should be, but ‘life’ has a habit of intruding and distracting.

Who are your favourite authors?

My favourite authors are Jane Austen, Katherine Mansfield and Alice Munro,  all female writers, wonder if there is some significance in that?
